The Right Program For Me

I was back in New York City by November 1982. On December 8th, almost one year to the day since I had flown home to find out how to pray, Fay Jean took me to her A.A. meeting and brought me a daily prayer book, Day by Day. The prayer for that day was: “Lord, may I realize that this program is not a punishment but a step forward with You.” This little book full of prayers, sanity, and healing words carried me through the next months while Fay Jean and I looked for a Twelve Step program that would fit me.

I wasn’t an alcoholic or a drug addict. I didn’t have a food disorder, and I wasn’t an adult child of an alcoholic. I was addicted to romance and sex. I had emotionally overdosed on love affair after love affair. I was also a workaholic. But in 1983, there did not seem to be a Twelve Step program for these problems.  Mainly, I was a walking dead person.
